fear of judgement

What Is Your Biggest Fear?

****Fear of being Judged*****

Judgement and fear of Judgement is the biggest fear that exists in our society.

This fear can stop you from reaching your true potential

it can STOP you from doing what you secretly love

It can STOP you from telling people you true desires

It can STOP you becoming the best version of you

It can STOP you from being the REAL you.

I have been guilty of this.

It took me a while to realise it

Thing is, everyone cares about what people think of them

so instead of being your true, authentic version of you

you turn up with the version that you think that will fit in

the one that will not be judged when they are with their friends, family, work colleagues

The version that laughs when everyone is laughing when you really want to cry

The version that ridicules when everyone is judging when you really want to be empathetic

The version that agrees with the conversation when you really want to disagree

But how does that serve you?

How does that serve you becoming a sub personality?

a version of you that stops you being you

undermining who you REALLY are?

Everybody has judged or does judge.

Thinking that others are judging you starts with you judging them, why else would you think they are judging you?

Realise that fear of judgement starts with you

Let go of judgement

Accept that having to act differently to fit in, does not serve you.

Accept that you can only control you

Accept that you can only work on being the best version of you…for YOU!

Appreciate that the true version of you is enough

other versions of you does not allow you to rise above

to fulfill your true potential

to become who you were destined to be.

Every day, turn up as the best version of you.

With gratitude and humility

with truth and honesty

forgo the fear, hate, anxiety and stress

and Embrace the real you

Simply Choose to Begin

To become the best version of you you can be, you have to grow as a person. Small thinking will not get you there. You have to expand your mind and your thoughts.

You will have to contract to expand. You have to focus on the important things, the challenging things, cut away the excess, the superfluous, the distractions that don’t serve you.

Once you are aligned you will be able to expand yourself, your consciousness will grow to allow you to become a better version of you.

Focus on impacting as many people as you can in a positive way.

Stop defending the reasons why you are where you are. Stop arguing with everybody about why you are where you are.

Stop thinking about what you cannot have and instead focus on what you want.

You cannot move forwards focusing on the past

If you want to become the best version of you, if you want to be a better person, then let go of why you think you cannot be. Flip it around, you will get what you focus on the most, so STOP thinking about what doesn’t serve you and START focusing on the life you want.

There is so much pain in this world that people now actively go out of their way to avoid it, isolating themselves from “potential” pain, pain that they perceive based on their past stories.

This most commonly turns out to be a bullshit story.

As a race, we thrive on connection, but now it is frowned upon, its not the done thing, we fear judgement and ridicule so we don’t do it.

Well I am here to tell you to start connecting.

Connection is love and love is what everyone wants, to be and feel loved and wanted.

This isn’t some bullshit sissy crap. Real people let go of their egos and allow themselves to connect. It is seen as a weakness but it is possibly your greatest strength

Anyone who says otherwise is playing a story in their head and ultimately will feel lonely.

become more vulnerable, allow yourself to connect with others.

We seem to live in a world where you are encouraged to bottle up and hide emotions, to keep things to yourself.

When in reality, being truthful and honest with yourself and others leads to great strength and belonging.

To become a better version of you, you have to DEMAND that a better version of you show up EVERY SINGLE DAY!

If you want your life to be better, contribute DAILY to change

If you want to change how you look, contribute DAILY to change

If you want to change how you feel, contribute DAILY to change

If you want to have a better relationship, contribute DAILY to change

If you want a better or different career, contribute DAILY to change

if you want to be happy, contribute DAILY to change

Lower the barriers, make connections real and I mean real, not via social media, connect with more people in real life, face to face and watch how you grow as you do it.

If you don’t show up every day demanding the change, you will stay how you always have been.

It doesn’t have to be grand gestures, just little promises that you keep to yourself EVERY DAY.

Each little step will take you forward to a rich and rewarding life.

If you focus on how you can first help yourself and then help other people without any thought of reward

Have the courage to focus on being the best version of you, the courage to start.

Simply choose to BEGIN x

50 Shades of Deano

Recently I was challenged by my good friend Matt Murphy who had put up 25 things people may not have known about him on facebook. I didn’t need persuading, I thought it was an interesting thing to do so I set up digging up random memory’s and experiences from my past.

Its amazing what you remember when you think about it and what I discovered is that I have had some great experiences as well as not so great. But thats what makes me me.

So I started with the 25 list, but just found it too restrictive so I expanded it to 50. Did I have more? I did, but capped it, maybe I will do a part 2 some day 😉

So here, in no particular order in my 50 facts about me…

1. I am irritatingly optimistic, I always look at the bright side and look at “Flipping” any situation to see the benefit of what it could be.Get-Shorty-1995

2. My favourite film is get shorty. I saw it in San Diego in 1995, I remember it so clearly because the film is based in LA and I had just been to the airport where some of the scenes were shot, I was so excited. Well I was only 23 😉

3. I can do the rubik cube in under 1min 30s. My party trick even now. hand me a rubik cube at a party and I will sit in the corner and do it LOL…. yeah sad I know!

4.I am OCD about people leaving lights on. It really does my head in!

5. I have a degree in computing for business.

6. I try and do everything at once… all the time, guess how that turns out LOL

Joy n Sam7. I am lucky that I found and married my soul mate, Joy. We have been together a long time and I wouldn’t change a single minute of our time together,  Love you babes x. I also have the best son in the world (biased of course :-)) He is so cool I have to pinch myself sometimes that I am so lucky to have this dude in my life.

8. My Achilles heel is shortbread and can devour a whole tin, yes whole tin in a matter of minutes!…. mmmmm

9. I have black belts in 3 different martial arts. This started way back in 1988 with my Dan grade in Jintian-Do. Don’t ask Kenn Forrest about the date though, he will argue it was 1987…. I know I am right 😉

10. I have ran 3 miles in 15 minutes in my distant youth. I think I was Early 20’s. I remember the night clearly, I was ultra pissed off about something and it was totally adrenaline fueled.

11. If I had been a girl my name would have been Dawn, well according to my Mam anyway.

12. I Worked in California when I was 23 in IT, wanted to live there but life got in the way (because I let it) and I bought a house in the UK instead.

13. I am a Self confessed computer /gadget geek and Had my own IT biz for 12 Years

14. I once ate 2 double whoppers in one sitting, just because I could

15. I Once had 2 bar meals one after the other after my car broke down on the way to the pub and I was starving when I got thereReal Combat System Grading

16. I have had 1 hangover in my entire life, despite a huge amount of alcohol over the last 27 years and I have had some drunken nights for sure, too many to remember, but some great times. I consider myself blessed (Joy, my wife more than makes up for it, she just needs to smell wine and she is ill the next day)

17. On the way to said hangover I drank 12 pints of LCL lager and won a “throw the wellie” contest at a local club

18. I have been to the Maldives twice and consider it one of the most beautiful places on earth and actually cried both times I left

19. I am a qualified advanced open water diver and I have dived in the maldives, St Lucia, Barbados and the Mediterranean. Once you dive in the Maldives though, everything else becomes a poor second!

28. I once jumped on the stage at the end of a blues brothers tribute act and danced with them. Well it was rude not to, they were excellent 🙂

29. I have seen the legend Freddy Mercury & queen live on stage at st James Park in 1986. The best concert I have ever been to, skived off school at 14 to go and see it and the ticket was a bargain price of £13.20!

30. I played in goal for my school team

31. I am driven to succeed and will never give up on something I want to do, even if I get knocked down every day trying

34. I had planned to take Joy to New York on Sept 10th 2001 for our wedding anniversary on the 12th, postponed the trip due to work commitments only for the twin towers to go down the next day. I still get a bit shell shocked when I think about what might have been.

43. Our son was conceived naturally despite what the doctors said and i know this is solely down to my study of nutrition and seeking out help from experts in this topic and is why I am so passionate on the subject

44. When I worked in San Diego in 1995 I got lost on my first day driving and a 5 minute drive to work took 2 hours!

45. My earliest memory of my life was being a few months old & looking up at my dad as he mistakingly put the safety pin of my nappy into my bits whilst putting it back on… True story!

Dean Coulson - the fit formula46. I am a best selling author

47. Despite my martial arts background I am a peace lover. As Daniel La Russo from the karate kid said “I train, so I don’t have to fight”. Violence is below my game. But make no mistake, I will destroy anyone who tries to hurt my family.

Supplementation for Health and Performance

I am a big fan of supplementation.

Make no mistake though supplements do not make up for a poor diet. Nutrition is paramount. Once you clean that up, then you look at whether there is a need to supplement.

There are times however when supplementation is necessary. In fact I would go so far as to say that because of intensive farming methods, supermarkets buying in massive quantities and cold storing you will not get the nutrients that your body needs from the food you eat.

Couple that with modern life and the high stress levels that robs our bodies of vital nutrients and environmental pollutants that do the same, there can be a strong argument for having a daily supplementation regime in place.

NOTE:  supplementation is not ‘meal replacements’ or ‘drug taking’. There is a huge difference.

Of course making the statement above I always get the question of…

“Why do I need supplements? Shouldn’t we get everything we need from our diet?”….

Put it this way…. If you live in a cave in a faraway land, away from all the pollutants (chemical and electromagnetic), spend most of your day keeping active instead of sitting on your arse in an office with poor oxygen, where you had access to a natural source of fresh clean drinking water instead of partaking in the office coffee round. Have no stress, sleep like a baby, have all the energy you want in a lean muscular physique instead of grabbing a quick sarnie from the sandwich van, eat nothing but lean organic game meat that you caught yourself, with some organic fruits and veggies that you picked that very same day, then you probably won’t ever need any further help and support for your body.

At a guess I would say that isn’t you and that your day quite possibly consists of sitting behind a desk or wheel of a vehicle, grabbing a quick sandwich and being bored.

You see it is getting so hard to get the correct nutrition and be in an environment that we as a species thrived in. Instead we have the weight of the world on our shoulders trying to make ends meet with a stress meltdown just waiting to happen. We are in a survive state, far removed from the thrive state we were once in.

So that prompts the question…

What the hell do we do about it?

Supplements Vitamins for Healthy Living WellnessIf we are not getting the nutrients we need daily, then where do we start?

How do we choose the right supplements given that if you walk into the average health shop you will have a choice of 1000 different products, most with names you couldn’t spell without looking?

With dubious advice from people who work there who in most instances do not practice what they preach?

Of course you could have these “discussions” until the cows come home so I thought I would give you a helping hand in what you should look into. These recommendations are what have worked well for me personally and for my clients in my own fitness company. Assert Fitness.

They are based on what is required for the person, not the biggest and best magazine advert or what is on special at a supermarket or what “Derrick” from work says!

The greatest thing that the general populous have to deal with daily are that most have some kind of hormone imbalance, so simply buying things “off the shelf” rarely benefits the person as there may be other underlying factors. With our clients these usually appear in conversations we have and can be addressed. It is always better to seek professional advice from someone who knows what they are talking about such as a nutritionist.

Remember, Stress plays a major factor in every ones lives and it can kill. Make no mistake, if you are highly stressed due to relationships, finances, people or your job, the effect of supplements will be limited, but could just help keep you stable.

There are so many things touted for the management of stress there are simply too many to mention and some do not suit certain people. However, I am going to stick with what I have experience in so don’t readily discount things if they are not mentioned in this article.

I always look for best bang for buck so 90% of the time the supplements will do the job, where the other 10% may just need something more.

Before addressing supplements for stress though the following actions are the most important before you consider anything else.

  • Train and rest/recover well. Get lots of sleep
  • Train correctly, at the right intensity and regularly
  • Focus on eating clean and keep toxins out of your system as much as you can. That being said don’t feel guilty about eating anything you want once a week.
  • Learn to manage stress
  • Those closest to you aren’t the best people to guide you with this stuff. Most of them are in the same boat and would rather keep up a pretence and mock you rather than admit their own problems.

Be aware that if I mention brand names than it is simply because that is what I trust to do the job based on the results I have seen. There are always alternatives, but I cannot comment on what I have not used.

lean-greens.co.ukLOW ENERGY

This is such a common ailment that I wanted to start with it first. It certainly affects us in daily life and certainly when we are training. These are the supplements I recommend

  • Greens drink full of vitamins and minerals – Take: twice per day. Recommendation – Lean Greens from lean-greens.co.uk
  • Alkalizing Salts (sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium) – Take: twice per day. Recommendation: – Alkalising salts complex.
  • Vitamin C – Helps with stress as well as the immune system and repair. Take: with every meal. Recommendation: – 3g is a minimum requirement with upwards of 10g per day when training.
  • Vitamin D – Especially if you live in a high latitude location (e.g. UK) or live in a sunny place but live in your office!

NOTE: I would also look at a magnesium-zinc complex may also make a difference to your energy especially as you head over 30 towards 40 and beyond. Along with recovery after training it also helps increase testosterone levels that are a key consideration for many reasons. That is a topic for another article

LOW ENERGY / EXCESS MUSCLE SORENESS

Next up is a combination that ties in with low energy. We all know that training tires you out… or it should do! And there is a good chance that it can make muscles sore. I am sure you have had DOMS before 🙂

What we are looking at here is if you are always shattered the day after training, then you will have to look at your post-workout recovery. Most people either take nothing or just bang in a whey protein shake, but you can do much better than that…

  • Post Recovery Drink. A well balanced combination of carbohydrates and protein (and creatine if you engage in a lot of strength training). You can buy these individually and make it up yourself or my recommendation is Anabolic Drive or Vegabolic Drive by Phil Richards Performance.

Post recovery nutrition is the best time to pack in nutrients as your body is screaming out for them after you have depleted them during training. Your body is open to absorbing many more nutrients rather than storing excesses as fat at this time.

POOR SLEEP

Poor sleep can add to stress and certainly affect your health and most bodily processes get to work when you are in dreamland. There are various things you can look at taking to aid in a more restful sleep.

  • Magnesium – a complex based on nature’s relaxant which promotes overall wellbeing and relaxes the muscles. Take: before sleep. Recommendation: Magnesium Relax.
  • An amino acid complex designed to reset your brain waves and ‘slow your brain down’ – Recommendation: Amino Relax. When to take: Before Sleep
  • Tulsi Tea. Not a supplement but definitely helps. Not many people know of this tea, but it not only helps with sleep but tastes great too. Take: any time after 2pm.

EXCESS FAT

This is a bit of a minefield and can be due to a variety of hormonal issues but in general I would look at the following…

  • Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. Massively important that you address what you are eating. Start by basing your daily intake on low carbs to allow your body to use fat for energy.
  • Fish Oil – Look for a high potency fish oil high in essential fatty acids. Take: 6-10g per day spread out with meals. Recommendation: Ultimate Fish Oil as a great source of Essential Fatty Acids which tastes nice and orangey instead of Squeezing the guts out of a fish and chowing down.
  • Post Workout Recovery shake to improve recovery and maintain high metabolic rate
  • Thyroid complex. Sometimes addressing thyroid issues has been found to work, however you should seek clearance from your GP first especially if already on thyroid medication. Recommendation: Iodine Forte. Take: 1-2 caps with breakfast

fish oil liquidBE AWARE…

  1. Lots of people look at “fat burners” to help get rid of excess fat. I do not recommend thermogenics. They are high potency stimulants and can have an adverse effect on your adrenal. If you are a stress head then these can add to your symptoms and make your situation worse.
  2. Energy drinks seem to be taken with reckless abandon these days. If you are engaging in 60 mins or less of gym training, no matter how intense of how often, you don’t need energy drinks! This will blunt any effort to lose noticeable amounts of body fat. Your body cannot burn fat if you keep giving it an alternative fuel source! Eat good meals and you’ll be good to go.

POOR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Your immune system should be able to fend off bugs and viruses with ease. Instead we compromise ourselves via poor nutrition and high stress on a daily basis. Reaching for the flu meds has never been so high. How about instead you nourish your body and become indestructible? You breathe in pathogens every day, it is how well our immune systems are as to whether we breakdown and let it in. Here is what I am recommending to kick those bugs into touch…

  • Greens drink
  • High dose fish oil
  • High dose Vitamin C
  • Alkalizing Salts

The recommendations and doses are as above in the other sections. Keep your body strong!!

DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

Everything starts with the gut. Get your digestion right and you will feel better, more positive and have more energy.

  • Greens drink due to powerful inflammatory effect in the bowel area
  • Digestive enzymes – If your greens drink doesn’t have them in then look at supplementing. Helps make more energy and nutrients available for absorption
  • Provides support for digestive and immune health, enhances balance of good bacteria in the gut
  • L-Glutamine – helps repair the gut lining after damage.

DEPRESSION

Before I start on supplements, without doubt, mindset coaching is more important than anything else. However, anything that supports the brain is going to help get over depression or anxiety.

  • Fish Oils. Make sure it is high quality (as recommended above). The brain is made of 60% fat and is essential to get you thinking more clearly
  • Vitamin D may also help is you suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is due to lack of vitamin D via the sun and that is very common to be deficient in. Vitamin D helps to create serotonin, the feel good hormone.

Two for the Ladies…

PMT

Nutrition plays a major part in this too, so eating nutritionally dense food will help. Foods that give you loads of vitamins and minerals to aid the hormonal response. Here’s a supplement that will help you along.

  • Magnesium complex, especially if you experience increased chocolate cravings around your period.

CELLULITE

Follow the above fat loss advice as standard for this, but there are other things you can do. Cellulite is a made up word to describe the orange peel, dimple effect of the skin in the lower body in women.

  • Supplement with more heavy leg workouts as well (I know…nobody likes them but they’re less distressing than wobbly legs right?)
  • Vitamin C. Add a high dose into the mix to help with collagen reformation. This will prevent the skin ‘collapsing’ causing the infamous dimples!
  • Magnesium should also be added to help with circulation and toxin removal.

Vitamins Word Cloud

SPORTS SUPPLEMENTATION

However to summarise – it largely depends on intensity, duration and volume of training but these guidelines will hold you in good stead:

  • Pre workout nutrition. 60+ minute sessions, take 1 scoops of Heart Fuel (opens up the cardiovascular pathways) and 1 scoop of Amino Work Capacity (amino acid complex) 45 minutes before you start and 15-20 minutes in. If you are in a competition, chug it down 30-45 mins before your fight.
  • Post recovery nutrition. See excess muscle soreness above.

CONCLUSION

Supplements make a big difference, but remember as a rule of thumb, the cleaner your base nutrition, the bigger the impact the supplements have.

The worse your diet, the less effect they will have in taking you up another level in terms of energy, strength, stamina or body composition.

If you need any more advice on supplementation or want the links to the supplements we recommend then get in touch via email on info@assert-fitness.co.uk and I will help you out.

Oh by the way. I mentioned at the start that 90% of the time supplements work? Well here is the 100% er…

WATER.

Drinking a good 2-3 litres per day of good, clean water will do wonders for all of the above conditions provided you aren’t totally out of balance in any other areas.

It controls the function of every cell in your body which controls everything else!

Yes water is that important!!!

Overcoming Your OWN Objections

When people come to me for help there is usually a number of “reasons” why they stop themselves from their weight loss struggles. Lets see which ones you can relate too…

#1 Your “Problems”

If there’s going to be problems before you start any weight loss journey, then are you going to start it at all?

“I’ve got a wedding function, a hen do, a birthday, then after that it’s Christmas 2017 so i can’t really commit. But I really do want to change my life”.

You either see problems in every opportunity or opportunities in every problem. Which one is it?

#2 “I’ve got to ask my husband”

Why do you have to ask permission from your husband if it’s OK to start doing something that will make you a happier healthier person…

But then the last thing you would do is ask if it’s OK to buy the 3 pairs of shoes and the 2 dresses you have hidden at the back of the wardrobe?

#3 “I’m a fussy eater”

It means you have bought into a story about food. Something happened to make you believe you don’t like something, even if it was 30 years ago. You were not born not liking food, you built a story why you didn’t. Stories can be changed.fussy eater

What you really mean is that you love the stuff that you’re eating now. The stuff that doesn’t really serve you well, that makes you unable to look at yourself in the mirror. The very same food that’s making you really unhappy, but you’re NOT willing to give it up for no one and no one will tell you different.

#4 “I don’t have time”

You know that you have to start looking after yourself and now is the time to do something for you. You’ve made a decision to start working on a NEW you.
But there’s just not enough time in your day to do it. So the decision to change was a brief one and you’re sticking with the OLD you.

How is that going to serve you and your family if you are not 100%. How can you give them 100%?

#5 “I don’t believe I can change”

You want to lose weight, but you have tried and failed so many times that you don’t believe it’s possible to reach. So you’ll always live in fear of trying in case you fail again.  You think reaching for what you desire is impossible.

So it’s better not to ask for it at all, and stop trying.

Well guess what?….It is possible.

Only you can change it. But you are going to have to work hard at it and not stop until you have achieved it.

#6 “What will they think of me?”

Fear of Judgement is the BIGGEST fear humans have.

Worrying too much about what other people might think or say, rather than thinking about yourself and what you want. Wondering what they will think of you and you’re new body shape, fitness and strength levels.

It’s natural to think that and sometimes people do judge you. But only because they are not brave enough to do it themselves. It is far easier to pull someone down from a tree, than to climb up yourself.

Ask yourself this? is that what a true friend does? Those people always stop you from doing what you want to do.

#7 “I need someone to come with me”Yes no maybe

You have made a decision to change, which is awesome. But you want to be hand held. you want moral support.  You want someone to come along with you to change too, and you won’t go without them.

Hang on though, Aren’t you doing this for YOU? is it not time to take the first step yourself? to be brave and go and grab your life with both hands and seek out the happiness you are so desperate for?

#8 “I’m still going to do my own thing”

Hey Deano. As much as I am inspired by the results you get with your clients and heard great stuff about what you do and I am desperate to join.

“I am gonna give the same diet a go that I have tried for the last 10 years and keep eating the same foods as i was before that never shifted the weight”

“I am going to do the same exercise classes that weren’t working for me before, because if i do more of the stuff that didn’t work for me then……..it will work”

Very common and unfortunately why a lot of people stay the same.

As Einstien said, repeatedly doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is madness!

#9 “I’m not willing to invest in myself”

“I am ready to change this time and do this for me. I don’t know how do it so I need your help”

But if you are not willing to put the investment in yourself, financially and time wise then you will keep doing Number #8 above.

You have to put some “skin in the game” to invest in your health, otherwise you will get no results at all.

People put so little importance on their health now it is scarey. They would rather invest in drinking and eating binges to run away from the problems they have to face, which makes them more miserable.

How many cheap fad diets, gyms, exercise classes, and programs have you stuck to, and how many of them are getting you results right now?

#10 “It’s not the right time!”

If you get a gut feeling that it’s not the right time then i always say go with your feeling.

But if you have been saying it for a few weeks, months or even years, how long are you going to keep listening to that feeling?

If it’s been months…then that’s not a gut feeling.

It’s a sign of normality and being comfortable.

Its a sign of fear of change
